There are a lot of different kits out there. But if you want the best bang for the buck, then piece together your own kit (gt-40 hears from old Explorers, etc.)

A track heat will outflow a GT-40 though. Also, you will gain the most power if you piece together your own kit BUT most likely it will be more expensive if you buy everyting all new... plus the HP numbes will not be that much more... maybe 20?

Also, I thought that the TF kit was like $2,200? But dont forget about supporting mods. TB, MAF, injectors, fuel pump, afpr, etc.

i hear gt40 heads are weird.. do i have to use a gt40 intake?
i have hedman equal shortys.. do i need new headers?
what kind of hp gains should i expect with a set of gt40 heads, intake, headers, and the supporting mods and cam

a good bang for the buck head is victor juniors. nice big head that you can grow into. may lose velocity to start out but you can grow into them, especially ported. you could get some ported vic jrs. for less than afrs and they'll outflow the out of the box afrs. if you really want to go very top end get afrs

do you think my hedman headers would work for a gt40 head? also what intake would i have to have?

RE: Best bang for your buck top end kit

If your gonna go the gt40 route, id get the gt40P's, they outflow the 40's, but you have to get diff. headers with them because of the sparkplug angle, they almost go strait in.

so thats why you need different headers..
i never knew..
what about intake? will it bolt up to any aftermarket intake? edelbrock? tf?

what headers are you running?

Most headers will work on the GT40's, but the P's need different headers (like mentioned above). W/ the P heads, you'll need a header where the primary comes out farther before turning down toward the collector. You can also use shorty spark plugs and 90* plug wires to gain more clearance. FRPP makes some for the P heads that are stainless and won't corrode.

You can use any intake, but you should try to match it's rpm range to the combo you're running for best results. The trickflow street heat or track heat is popular as well as the Holley systemax or Edelbrock RPM/RPM2.

The TF kit with supporting mods and minor suspension work should put you into the 12's.

what do you tf guys run in the quarter?

RE: Best bang for your buck top end kit

wow.. thats about where i want to be.. i want a respectable street car, that drives to the track..
that would put me around 300 hp or so right?

88BlueGT 10-13-2006 02:02 AM

RE: Best bang for your buck top end kit

Yup, with supprting mods you should be right around 300rwhp. With a GOOD suspension and a small shot you could get deep into the 11's.

on slicks?

RE: Best bang for your buck top end kit

also, i just freshened up my motor.. rod bearings, main bearings, oil pump.. everything..
will my stock bottom end hold up under all this power? what about the t-5?

88BlueGT 10-13-2006 02:15 AM

RE: Best bang for your buck top end kit

Yes, your car could take 300rwhp very easily. Most people stop at aroun 450rwhp because they pretty much are at their limits. I personally know people who run 600rwhp! BUT its not a matter of IS the blocks will split its a matter of WHEN. I have also heard of people splitting them at 500rwhp... its a chance you take and thats why most stop at 450rwhp or in that area.

Also, your T5 will prob hold up but good luck... lots of guys have tons of problems when you mix stock t-5's and hp/tq.
