Default Gears for AOD 4spd.

What are the best gears for an 1987 LX 4spd AOD. It is a little sluggish on the start but has alot of top end right now with the stock gears. I plan on changing out the tranny eventually and want something to give it more snap on takeoff but still work well with the new tranny. Any suggestions?

Mac Headers
Cold air intake
Flowmaster exhaust
SSBC brakes
Ford racing Aluminum radiator
New plugs and wires
Eibach springs/KYB shocks suspension kit
BBK underdrive pulleys

the norm around here is 3.73s for 5speed, and 4.10 rear end gears for autos, i personally like 4.10s in my 5spd but thats just me.

I run 3.73's with my AOD. I'm glad now that I didn't go 4.10's because with my exhaust (SLP) freeway speeds would be just too damned loud. The 3.73's give a huge improvement in low-end response, but still give reasonable mileage and hi-speed driveability. On a recent 250-mile trip my bolt-on car delivered 22 mpg.

I've got the 4.10's and love them in my auto... although the shift from 1st to 2nd takes some getting used to

The fuel tank I'm pretty sure is 15.2 or 15.4 gallons. Atleast thats what it is on my 93 GT. Should be the same tank.

I'm running 4.10's. For a stock cam, they seemed a little much for the 1/4 mile because I ran out of gear. Otherwise, now with a better cam they seem great. Still decent highway mpgs. Plus....you have a V8 mustang----who would buy one of these for good fuel economy?

Just my $.02

Thanks for the input everyone. Next question..........has anyone put these gears in? If so, How long did it take and any special tools? I've been doing all the upgrades myself and only have a garage floor to work on. No lift. I think I'm going to go with the 4.10s Thanks
