Steering column wobble?

Ok, my column on my 88 has a lot of play in it. I had the surround off of it today while I was installing a new dimmer switch, but it was getting dark so I stopped. Is this a common issue for these cars? I know it was on some GM stuff. I have a 91 Sonoma with it right now that is terrible.

What can cause this and what should I check? Also, what is an easy fix for it or just any fix at all? I'd hate for something to happen and it break...

Is the the 88 tilt wheel? Is the play in the tilt mechanism (If applicable) or in column bearings?
On the GM there are three torx bolts down under the turn signal switch which work loose. Tighten them up and the play should be gone.

The low oil light, low fuel light and the 2 other indicators flash on and off if I push it right. I don't have power steering either.

My low fuel light has never came on....even that time I ran out of gas....my oil light no longer works either....I just check the oil level when it starts fluctuating with RPM...Yeah I know its not the best for the stang but it least I dont wait for the motor to start ticking before I check the oil level. So I guess that explains why my lights dont flicker he he...

Yea i have no lights coming on that i ever saw. Just moves at the tilt mechanism it looks like. The Sonoma Im not worried about. It is sold to a guy. But the stang does worry me some. So where exactly is the rag joint so I can check it?
