EGR valve

EGR valve
I just pulled some codes off my car, and it gave me a code for my egr valve not opening all the way. not sure if i want to just take it off and clean it out or just take it off and leave it off. What will this do for the performance of my car? oh and could the computer just think its not opening because my cats are removed so there is a pressure difference? i really have no idea

RE: EGR valve
first off an taking an egr off won't realy help with performance gains,it you leave it off you'll have a hugh vacum leak, so take the egr to a machine shop and ask the to make a plate that is that shape with just the mounting holes, and unless your car is a 96+ which it isn't removing the cats won't cause the code, i have an O/R h pipe on my 94 and no problems, if you remove the egr permenently the engine light will say on, unless you go get the code deleted from the computer

RE: EGR valve
the egr does help keep the engine cool, don't ask how hot exhaust gas cools a motor it;s a long story... but any way when i took mine off i didn't have any overheating problems, the egr is designed to only open a crusing speeds, ie. 55 and up and only a a certain throttle %, and no it won't hurt your performance, the way an egr works is it takes the exhaust an places it back in the engine(good cause of dirty engines) so if it stays open when your a WOT then you'll actualy loose power, but taking it off will not harm anything except maybe 1-2 MPG and cause you light to come on

RE: EGR valve
Cools the engine because there's not much fuel to burn after the combustion stroke, so when it sends that gas back into the engine, what's left of the fuel burns, but a lot cooler than if you were pouring fresh gas into the engine.
Taking it off will hurt performance slightly. Just get a new one, EGR has a few benefeits. And your car will never run right if you take it off. Besides, the EGR is closed at WOT, so you don't have to worry about those used gasses getting into the engine when you stomp it. All that being said, get a new or used EGR

RE: EGR valve
You should check your vaccume lines. They get brittle and crack or rub and wear a hole in them. In-sufficient vaccume will only open the valve partially. If you are concerned about passing an emission test removing the egr valve may cause to fail.
