Default Tubro Coupe T5 and New Motor

A guy I work with gave me the t5 out of his turbo coupe tbird. Its in great condition and doesn't grind at all. I'm going to put it in my 86 mustang but how do you think its going to hold up to launching on slicks. I'm putting my new motor in saturday and sunday.

My new motor is a 68 block w/ 83 internals. Has a comp flat tappet cam 224/224 duration and 500/500 lift. I have 78 heads on it but they are going to be the first thing to go. Its topped off w/ a torker 289 manifold and 650 holley carb. I know the heads are really going to kill my setup but they are going to be the first things to go followed by the carb. What do you guys think of my new setup. I'm going to try to trailer it to the track at least once this year.

that tranny is not made for the torque of a v8. It'll last for a little while but from the sound of your setup it wont be for long. They are the same t5's that are behind 2.3 mustangs ( well not entirely the same but not much better) but the car sounds like it will be sick, 1 question though why go flat tappet instead of a roller cam?

you will need a different pilot bearing for it to work.

Well the car is going to be drag only so I guess this tranny isn't going to last. I have mickey thompson slicks on the car and I'm probably going to use them. I have a flat tappet cam because its a 68 block, non roller. I've heard alot of bad this about those retro fit cams so just stuck with the flat tappet.

Thanks for the info silver gt.

Say goodbye to the input shaft. The transmission is indeed the same as the 2.3L mustangs. Thats great for the Turbo Coupe guys, since there are thousands of 4 banger stangs in junkyards, but for you 5.0 guys, they dont do much.

Its free and doesn't grind so it will work for now. I just bought a new mustang and dumped a couple hundred in the motor so I'm pretty broke right now. I still have to buy a trailer to tow the car with.

If you use the 4 cylinder one, you need a pilot bearing from a Ford Probe. Im unsure of what year, or engine, but the probe has the proper outside diameter to fit in the 5.0 crankshaft, and the inside diameter for the 4 cylinder tranny input shaft.

Thanks for the info, I'll try tracking down which one it is.
