Hey s guys I'm hoping for a little help on this one. I picked up my new 1987 5.0 vert last night 9 motor is a 1990). The engine does not run smooth (revs up and down a lot) and the alt light is on on the dash. I know the alt is new but i called Napa auto and they are clueless on this. The alternator has two plus on it. One is the multi plug and the other is a small maybe a lil less then 1/4 inch with a single prong in it. The wire that goes in it does not have the right plug on it therfore it falls out. When its out of the alt when i turn the key i get no start but when it's in it starts but still runs weird and has the ALT light on. Any thoughts if need be i will pots a pic or two after five oclock. Thanks.

I'd skip the troubleshooting and save yourself some hassle and buy a new alternator with new plugs on it!

I was thinking that but i have no clue on how to wire it corectly, do you knwo of any diaghrams or anything. The alt was new in Sept but the past owner did a crap wire job. (electrical tape all over theplace)....Thanks

You dont have to rewire your alternator when you change them? Did he try to upgrade or something?

You should just upgrade to a 3G alt while your at it...

did he cut off the connectors? all you have to do is pull the old one and reconnect two plugs? why would he tear into the wiring? i can take a pic of mine later tonight and send it to you, but i dont have any diagrams, sorry.

I have no clue what heck he did, thanks i would love to see pics i will send some as well later to see if i can get this done without spending mucho bucks.
