in a previous post ( 06 gt vs 86 gt) it was said to put gt40 heads and intake off of a wrecked explorer. did explorers come with gt40 heads and intake from the factory? if so what years?

This has probably been discussed 12 times this week alone. 1997 1/2 and up = GT40P. 1997 1/2 and down = GT40.

yes, up until 97.5 they had gt40 heads(8.8 compression, lower than the factory 9.0:1 on the mustang) after 97.5 they had gt40p's which made more power than the gt40's, but mustang headers wont work with them(sparkpluig clearence issues)... many companies make p specific headers to use with them

A used pair of GT40 or GT40P heads will generally be a bit dirtier and may possibly have some rust spots. Thats how you can identify a used pair.

gt40 will have "GT" stamped above the front or rear plug hole, gt40p's will have "GTP"

You will know just by looking to see if GT or GTP is stamped on it. But if for some reason you cant find that, check out this article here. It's all about the GT40P heads. near the bottom it tells you some other ways to identify the heads.
