with the lower rear gears, the engine speed has to be higher for the same wheel speed so the engine is allowed to accelerate quicker into its higher rpms with the 3.73's vs the 2.73's. it's the same principle for 1st gear in the tranny, it lets the engine rev up better to get the car moving, then you shift into lower gears to bring the rpms down for cruising speeds.
