E7's will definitly work, its been a pretty popular swap for 86's for a while. They have the same size valves as 86 heads as well as the same valve location. They are pretty much a direct swap.

i talked to ford themselves through the ford tech line. they told me there is no aftermarket cylinder head that will just bolt onto a 86 short block without piston to valve clearence problems. e7's also will not fit also.. well they will but you need to notch the pistons just like you would with any other cylinder head you could buy. pretty much.. if you are looking to do heads... change the short block or get the pistons notched... i'm in the same boat as you.
i hear some people have said that the trick flow twisted wedge head will work.. i am not sure if this is correct or not..but..i would think the guys onthe ford tech line would know what there were talking about .. and they said no... they also said that because of the flat top pistons.. forad actualy had to sink the valves deeper into the heads on e6 heads just to make sure there was no piston to valve clearence problems.
Just my $.02
