rearend and gears????

rearend and gears????
how do i tell what rear end i have, as well as what gears i have. my mustang was a mixbreed, orginally it was a 4 banger, the guy i bought it from made it a 5.0. my 1/4 mile times suck and my stang doesnt have the pick up that others have. so i am wondering if it could be because i have the wrong rearend/gears in it, or even the transmission??? how would i figure this out.? thanks
