Default multiple coil ignitions

Ohhhhhh how I hope I have the proper forum this time with this my query. being new here as of just the week end I am excited with thought but SO new to this forum that.............I managed to annoy some memebers, that wasnt my intention. TONIGHT I got directed to and found my way here.
O.K. I drive just regular old CARS two ford products and another non ford all from the 1980s. I have always thought that one ignition coil for ALL those cylinders was a bit inadeqauate. At last earlier this year an elderly mechanic got me to focus on that. NOW I want to rig my engines up with an upgrade!
To accomplish this ideally quickly and simply I wound up with the idea to leave the regular coil and distributor in tact. But disconnect the spark plug cables from the distributor cap. In their place wire standard ignition coils to the contacts AND THE SPARK PLUGS to these individual coils!
Would all the voltage coming from the distributor cap burn out the coils before they could fire the spark plugs??? Is there a resistor I could install to knock the distributor cap voltage back down for accpetance by the new coils???
Is there anyway to get the coil to send a small amount of voltage to the distributor cap so that the voltage would still arc across the rotor to charge the cap and then the coils please???
