I believe the majority of mustangs on the road aren't pushing 400whp and probably won't as long as they are on the road. Which would make the 4.10's more fun. Just an opinion. If he thinks that he will have over 400whp one day then he should go with the numerically lower gear. It does make sense.

I think you are overestimating what 400 RWHP is. Im pushing 430 RWHP and mine is a daily driver. You wouldn't even know it by looking at it. It doesn't take much to reach 400 HP. You can take that out on the road with no problems at all.
I think that if someone is here at this forum, then they want as much HP as possible. And if they have the money to reach their goals (which is probably at LEAST 400 HP) then they may possuibly run into problems with a very short first gear with such high numbers and 4.10 gears.

True, a majority of the mustangs on the road aren't pushing 400 RWHP. But then again, a majority of the mustangs on the road dont have 4.10s, or 3.73s, or even a CAI. A majority of the mustangs on the road are bone stock. The people that come and post on this site want power. I don't know of one person that posts here who doesn't want more RWHP. The only reason to add gears is to make the car feel faster. If you are adding gears, it means you want a faster car.

Not dumping on ya or anything Just slightly disagreeing. You are right, the majority of the people are that way. But I think that the people that come and are active here don't fall into that catagory. I just talked about this about a week ago in a post I made.
July, 2006. I had a bone stock Mustang with 185 RWHP.
September, 2006. All of a sudden I'm pushing 430 HP with a Supercharger, Nitrous, 3.73s, Shift Kit, Ratchet Shifter, Water / Methanol Injection, Roll bar, Euro lights, plus some other stupid stuff, LoL. And by the end of November, 2006 you can add new Cylinder Heads, camshaft, and an intake manifold to that.
You can make the jump from stock to 400 HP for under $3,000 which may seem like a lot of money to younger kids in High School, but it really isnt that much for me (29 year old w/ okay semi-decent paying job.)
Then again, I could be the oddball though who spends the moeny on the car much faster than the others. But either way, if my ultimate goal was to push some high HP numbers... I'd hate to waste time putting in 4.10s just to have to swap them out, along with a new speedo gear when I get there. Kind of like doing H/C/I swap... if you have the top end apart and you're working on it, you might as well do them all at the same time to save time and money down the road...rather than replace the cam now and the heads next month.
I'm not saying you're wrong or anything.. we just have different opinions. I'd just rather do it and do it once. I'd rather be patient and reach my goal rather than have to spend extra time, money, and effort down the road to undo something I put in earlier.
