Default advance/retard cam timing

i have an 87 gt that i am rebuilding the engine in. the cam has E303 stamped onto the back, i assume it to be from ford racing. my timing chain has a 4 degree advance and a 4 degree retard. my engine is completely stock, except for a little bit of porting on the exaust ports, and i drive the car each day. should i advance or retard my cam, or leave it at 0? i would like a little more power, but i don't want to let my fuel milage get under about 20. any advice? oh, yeah, i am running a t-5 too.

thanks,
michialj

Default RE: advance/retard cam timing

advancing or retarding the cam just moves the peak HP and torque curves around in the rpm ranges. for a daily driven street engine, I would recommend you install the cam straight up at 0. since you have a speed density engine, you will not want to do a lot to affect the engine vacuum by changing the cam duration too much or the ECU will have trouble controlling the engine.
