I think you'll get higher readings if you do it with the motor warm. I've done them both ways (admittedly never on a car), and always got better numbers with a hot motor. One question though: It's not hard on the starter to run the test without taking ALL the plugs out? I ask because for a while, I kept burning up bike starters doing comp. tests...then I started taking all plugs out and didn't have that problem. Maybe it doesn't apply here so much.
