Default Interesting 5.0 question

Why are the 98 explorers rated at only 215 hp stock with gt40p heads and intake which have better flow, and the 87-92 5.0 puts out 225 hp stock. Just wondering, is it all about the cam.

Yes it's the cam. The Explorer cams were designed for gobs of torque compared to the mustang cams.
The mustang cams produce way more power than the explorers.

actually its all about the way they rated it..they started around i think 94 rating the hp with all accessories on the engine..so you had a little power loss the explorer motors rated the old way would probably be around 235-245 area...and also remember that the explorer exhaust wasnt very good so you had power loss there too..

yea the 93 stang is only rated at 205 hp, so the explorer is actually rated higher than the stang.

Mosly to make the newer 4.6 look better when they put it in the explorer.

Kinda...auto manufatures started rating engines with "full dress" back in the 70's, but ford did change their rating system in 93.

The Explorer cam is spec'd at around 204/204 ~.420/.420
