T-top and vert doors

I was wondering if anyone has ever put t-top or vert doors on their stang to eliminate the door frames. is this even possible? I was looking at a t-top hatchback and it looks like i could make it work on my hatchback with some thicker weatherstrip. what do you guys think?

RE: T-top and vert doors

a very very experienced body/trim shop might be able to handle some custom work like that, but honestly... thats real ricer

RE: T-top and vert doors

why?

RE: T-top and vert doors

what advanage are you looking for with this?

mattdel 11-15-2006 08:42 PM

RE: T-top and vert doors

cuz it is. you see that on acura's and ****. not to mention the added weight of the lambo door kits, gotta find a spot to mount the hydraulic pump, hoses, 2 door pistons(HD), door popper solenoids, wiring, bracketry. just doesn't seem worth it to add that much weight for that.

motorman524 11-15-2006 08:46 PM

RE: T-top and vert doors

well it was just for apperence, if it wont work then it wont work. no rice rocket here.[sm=gears.gif]
no lambo doors!

wine_maker 11-15-2006 08:58 PM

RE: T-top and vert doors

find a t-top stang and take lots of mesurements and see if the larger door seals will fit.
if you think they will work go for it.

i think this would also be original.

RE: T-top and vert doors

im not sure how its rice. He wants vert or t-top doors so it doesnt have the frame around the top of the window. Not some lambo doors, he wouldnt need all that stuff cuz he isnt doing lambo doors so wheres all the extra weight gonna come from. I have no idea if itll work and I have never even considered it but I wouldnt mind seeing what happens with this idea.

dimebag 11-16-2006 02:38 AM

RE: T-top and vert doors

i dont think itll work out... just my opinion tho... if it does itll be sick man, and youll have to post up pics!!!! g/l. and no, its not ricerish to do it...

RE: T-top and vert doors

well my dad has been with ford for 30 or so years and he was pretty pumped when i threw this idea at him. he wants to help me with it. so i think its worth a shot, ill most def put up pics of it in progress and when its finished. i was just wonderin if anyone has ever been hit with this idea.

RE: T-top and vert doors

i thought about it, my old car didnt have that top piece, and i liked that. but after thinkin about it, i noticed how big that frame up top was and figured i couldnt do it... prove me worng... please, lol.

RE: T-top and vert doors

in case you didnt catch that, it was a challenge! You wont do it motorman...you WONT!:D

RE: T-top and vert doors

pretty sure he's just looking to swap a stock coupe door with a stock vert door to eliminate the doors window frame? no mention of lambo doors was made, this wouldn't be ricer imo, but a challenge in weather for sure... but i bet its doable with the right weatherstripping, i dont see why not.

ebxgsxr 11-16-2006 10:44 AM

RE: T-top and vert doors

but would there be an advantage to go with a frameless door?and would it look right if you have to add a very thick weatherstripping to compensate for the difference? im curious now. but i just dont know what the advantages are of doing it?

motorman524 11-16-2006 12:45 PM

RE: T-top and vert doors

like i'd said before, there is no advantage at all. this would be an apperence thing. its like pickin out the right hood to fit your car or your paint or rims. it's an idea and i think it would be diff.[sm=morning.gif]

as far as weather, this car wont see much of it. it'll b garaged during fall and winter. as far as rain goes though.. i dunno. i've considered that that thick weatherstrip would look a lil funny but it should be unnoticable cuz my car is black. i really need to get measurements of a t-top vs my car though. i'm really the only guy around here that cares about stangs so noone esls has one.

RE: T-top and vert doors

Sure there is an advantage! Weight savings.

motorman524 11-16-2006 12:55 PM

RE: T-top and vert doors

naw you wouldnt save much weight doin this.[&:]

89GTRed 11-16-2006 08:30 PM

RE: T-top and vert doors

you would save a good 1-2 lbs!:D

wine_maker 11-17-2006 09:40 PM

RE: T-top and vert doors

the weight adv. is to the - side as to gain 2-3 lbs more glass and support.

But if he wants it for looks makes no deff.

go man : a custom oh yea<<

RE: T-top and vert doors

is there any vert or ttop guys that can give me the deminsions of their doors. or is there a website i can find this info. or am i gonna have to go to a junkyard with a tapemeasure?

vt89gtvert 01-08-2007 12:47 AM

RE: T-top and vert doors

I can help with that when i get back to my car (Thursday) if you want me to. Just tell me what you are looking for and I will see what i can to. One thing that I don't think has been mentioned and you might want to consider it the increase noise from wind. even with thick weather stripping you are going to get some of that noise us vert guys have grown used to. I don;t think it will be as bad as if it was a vert, just worse then in a normal coupe.

motorman524 01-08-2007 12:56 AM

RE: T-top and vert doors

yeah cool man. basically i want to make sure the actual doors are the same size as the doors on my ride. i need like a horizontal length measurement from the longest most points of the door, a vertical height measurement, and a width measurement of the door jams. i'm not real worried about wind noise, ive been driving my stang for about 4 months now which has no radio, dumps, and no interior.lol just parked her and got back into my dd. if you guys thonk i need any other measurements just chime in.

vt89gtvert 01-11-2007 05:58 PM

RE: T-top and vert doors

OK, so I took some measurements for ya. got7 total, if these match it should be the same door. From the back(Door handle side) of the door Bottom corner to top window corner 37 5/8" that was an inside measurement since the door curves outward. From top of door trim to bottom corner 23.5" (Also inside measure). now for lneght. Bottom of door 50 3/8" corner to corner. Top of door trim in middle of door 53.5", top of door 47.25" and top of window 24.5". Door thickness was hard to get exact for but it looks like 4.75" or so. If ya need anything else just drop me a line

RE: T-top and vert doors

you know all you have to do it saw off the top of the doors and you
have t-top/vert doors, just need to find the end cap pieces for the change over, you will need to use top/vert weatherstripping on the
front and rear leading edges of the glass to do so to fill the gaps
a friend did that to his mustang several years ago , just find a parts car to get that stuff first and just use the doors you have to save $ $

RE: T-top and vert doors

I know for a fact that the t top door glass and the vert door glass are very different.

Not4you 01-12-2007 12:12 AM

RE: T-top and vert doors

My old t-top leaked like a sieve around the top and sides of the windows. It was a real PITA after a rain or washing the car. It may be a cool idea, but practically ... I'd think twice about giving yourself the aggrivation of the leaks without the benefit of a full t-top/ vert. I hope you live in the desert.

Mike 83 GLX 01-12-2007 12:16 AM

RE: T-top and vert doors

If this will work at all, you'd have to use t-top glass and door internals. The vert glass is shorter and the forward edge has a different angle than the other styles, so won't work.
