Default new motor help ideas

Well it seems I've blown both my headgaskets. There was rust in my block that got into my coolant and even after being flushed a few times still lead to excessive overheating hence the blown head gaskets. Now my worry is that I've warped the heads or the block is shot, there is no coolant in my oil, however it seems that oil is getting into my coolant. Anyway my problem is the car has 125k and I'm not sure I want to do the work to replace the head gaskets and then find out the block is ****ed or something else goes wrong shortly after.

So what are my options? I've been looking at some crate motors and the cheapest I could find was around 3200 which is a little more than I wanted to spend. Would I be saving money if I just bought a short block from dss for around 1600-1800 and got the heads, cam, and everything else myself? I have a few parts I can swap over from my old motor, trick flow street heat manifold and so on. Just wondering if theres any other cheaper options out there that I may not know about, or any place that builds crate motors for a bit cheaper. I don't need a complete racing engine but if I am going to spend the money I would def like something with more power. Any suggestions are welcome, thank you.

yes, crate motors are an expensive solution for those who don't care to build thier own!
