Default AOD and 7.5 rearend

I've got a rebuit AOD tranny with stock stall TC and a hammer shifter. Stock 7.5 in my 85 with stock gears and 235s.
Brand new FRPP 347 with Windsor 200cc heads, mild cam, and (unused and not planned) nitrous fogger plate.
How much power can the AOD handle reliably, and would it respond better to install a shift kit in it?
as far as the rear end goes i don't have many choices at my local yards so i'm pretty much limited to ordering a remanned or new rear end.
should the rear end and AOD be good for the street and maybe a stoplight drag once in a while? or am i looking at a timebomb?

thanks a bunch guys

Trans and Rear and both timebombs. Get rid of both of them. Did you have the AOD rebuild back to stock or did you use some aftermarket parts to beef it up a little? Either way a 347 will wreck that trans.

+1. i think the tranny might last a lil longer then the rearend though.. but both are deffanitly ticking time bombs.

Check out www.craigslist.com for a cheap rearend.. they have 8.8 mustang posi's for sale on there all the time for anything from $50-$200.

+1 And do yourself a favor and look for a rear with gears already installed. It will save you HUNDREDS! It just cost my over $600 to get my gears installed plus parts. You can get an already built rear with gears for like $200 bucks.

WOW thanks for the fast replies guys!
I'll try and look for the rearend in a bit. I'm on a satellite line in afghanistan so it kinda sucks on the internet.
The AOD was a fresh rebuild with some performance bits in it, it's got about 30 miles after the rebuild before i had the car stored.
I'm gonna have PBF in orlando install the engine, and i'll match a TC to my cam. When i get home i'll get around to the rear end and probably a shift kit for now in the AOD.
It had a T5 in it when it was given to my friend by his dad. he paid for hte swap to the AOD becuase he couldn't drive, and when the old motor started heading south he got all pissed and sold the car to me for $500, so a gain in all parts on my side. HaHa and no i can't get back the old T5 the tranny shop kept it as a core and a partial payment i believe. Thanks for the help again. if you can find a good rearend for me (4.10 gears are fine) i'd really appreciate it, if not it's all in good time i've got a few months till i get back.

Instead of doing a shift kit I would just get a nice valve body. You can go for a street/strip VB, manual, reverse manual, etc.

Use the trans you have and if it goes than get a new one if the money is there. The trans might hold up for a while though if you just get a nice trans cooler. Also, where are you located? You shouldnt have any real problems finding a used rear end if you are willing to drive a little bit. Maybe you can get lucky too and find out with a 5 lug conversion on it or something

Yeah i was thinking more about a valve body, but what's the difference between a reverse and regular pattern one? I have a 10" x 5" trans cooler on it now, is it sufficient or
should i go with something bigger? I live in Orlando Florida, so i was looking on craigslist last night but didn't find much. Found an 8.8 out of a 93 with 5 lug setup and 3.73 limited slip for $150, so i'll check that out when i get home.
thanks again

A 347 will not kill an AOD trans, the driver can, but with a lentech manual valve body, 3k stall, and a shift kit he'll be fine with a 347, the AOD is more reliable than the T5 and those will handle a 347 for a while... lol kinda sorta..

The 7.5 rear on the other hand is going to need upgrading in the future.....

LoL I think I worded that wrong...

TA Girdle Cover: 130
Gears: 160 (GF baught them for me)
Install Kit: 130 (friend baught them for me)
Gear Oil: $40
Speedo Gear: $25
Install: $325 (cheapest around)

So total came to like $800
