Both are lots of work.
Prep you need to pop any dents, fill if needed, sand some more, a mist coat of primer, sand some more to check for any high/low spots you mightve missed, repeat all that again if need be, hopefully its all smooth so you can lay the primer/base coat etc etc.
With painting you gotta be sure theres NO dirt or oils on the body, watch how close you are to the body, what angle youre spraying, how heavy the coat is, gotta watch the corners, and know how much reducers or whatever to add to the paint before you even start. Dont forget color sanding. You got the clearcoat, buff and polish, and make sure you dont burn thru everything with the buffer or its back to square 1. You get the idea.
I really dont believe one is any easier than the other. A good paint job is only as good as the bodywork done before it. The one doing the work is another story.

I spent like $350, and that was for under my hood, extra clear and a warranty. No orange peel, really smooth and glassy too. Had my 300ZX done at another place for like $200. That was with clear, and just exterior of car. A little orange peel, but still was decent. Though I think they left sand marks in it. I prepped the car, but I think they went back and sanded some leaving sanding marks.
I had problems with Maaco in the end. They busted my hood struts, and were being ****** about getting me new ones. Plus my car really stank of paint chemicals for weeks. And... they put some type of black stuff in/behind the side mirrors, and when it rained black junk would run down my doors under the mirrors (it was a white car!).
