Default new guy with some 5.0 questions

hey all. currently i drive a 2003 SVT Lightning with a few goodies on it. im also a motorcycle road racer, and avid dirtbiker. my current daily driver just crapped out and i will most likely be needing to pick up a new dd. being the performance minded guy i am, and since my first car was a 79 stang hatch, and i learned how to drive in a 87 lx i have a great love for mustangs. i dont think a 5.0 would be an ideal daily driver since i run 125miles a day commuting, but from what ive seen a decent 5.0 should do better than 13mpg that my lightning gets, and i just cant resist the urge anymore. so enough background, and onto my questions.

im a fan of the 85/86 gt, and the 87-92 notchbacks (so this is what ill be looking to purchase if my current dd is a catostrophic failure). but i really would prefer fuel injection, definately a 5spd, and hopefully pretty much stock. with that said what kind of fuel mileage would be realistic. i already ran a search and i got a variety of answers from as low as 13 to as high as 27 highway both modded and from what i could tell basically stock. that is a really wide range so a narrowed down answer would really help. also, with the cars i mentioned what are the known problems to look out for? and when buying used how many miles is past the point of no return (without major $$$ invested). ideally my goal is to spend less than 3g's on what i want.. also, if anyone has a line on something im looking for within a reasonable distance from me (westchester, ny) then drop me a line on that too. thanks for any help.

later, the newb!

If your gonna be modding it at all you will probably want to get a newer style notch, they already have MAF, and will probably get you the best MPG. I used to get about 17-20 when i had 2.73 gears. With 4.10's and a HCI i kissed that goodbye

you can get just under 25 w/ a stock fox 5 speed, alot of it depends on how you drive

thanks for the replies. no plans for mods on it just yet. ill save all that $$ to mod my lightning, i just want a decent 5.0, and it will strictly be a commuter car for a few years then all bets are off.

I have a performance 306 and when i drove it up to college (400 mile trip) i was getting right at 23 mpg the whole time. The only time i got worse than that lol was when i ran it on highway 2 open at 100-130 for 60 miles. I dont see why with a stock motor you couldnt get at least 23 or better. Thats just my opinion and experience tho.
