Hack is correct on this one. The last carbed 5.0's that Ford built used a type of 600 vac. secondary Holley.
Ford knows just a little about these cars.
I have an '84.
With a carbed 4 eye car the sky is the limit. You can directly interchange to the later roller motor and at least 30 differant type cylinder heads.
Set of TFS and some full length headers would really wake that pup up.
I like the air-gap intake idea also........
wooo another guy that knows carbs pretty well

double pumper dunktank i got it, either way with that engine that edelbrock is plenty and while holley is much better for drag racing, is a pain to get it tuned in right changin jets anytime temp changes, if hes got another daily driver then ya but if he is mostly drivin it year round stick with edelbrock. and gears is best bang for a buck.

i live in jersey and the weather here is retarded one day it 60 the next its 30 and i dive my 84 all year round never had a problem tuning it never had to change the jets he will be fine and the edlebrock is just a piece in general and it sounds like he wants to do engine work so he should get the holley anyway

Temp changes fooling with Holley jetting?
What are you guys smokin'?
The poor thing probably has a choke problem.....
Don't get me wrong the Eddy carb (Carter AFB) is a fine carb and is used in some racing applications, I've done it several times myself on my old car but the things are not as tunable as the Holley.
I would use a vac secondary in anything thats over 3000# and don't have a high stal converter..
My car is a 306 with a Barry Grant 650 mechanical secondary but it's got a 3500 converter and is about 2850# with driver and is strip only.....

well i had a 800 edelbrock on a buick 455 hauled all kinds of *** and after intially puttin it on i never messed with it for 2 years, i know no holley can go that long without some kind of adjustment. Id just take a little flack for not having the beloved double pumper and be lazy.

like i said my carb hasnt been tuned in over a year with out a problem. and if your car had the original holley on it im not surprised it wasnt running right. they had a recall on them. holleys arent carbs you can always take out of the box and bolt on some need a different secondary vacuum spring others need to just be tuned a little and worse cause you will need a new power valve but i havent seen that one

That cam wont work with your motor. it's designed for a non-roller cam motor. the motor in your 85 is a roller cam motor. if you want to make some power and have a nice lopey idle and want to get out of the cam swap pretty cheap look into the "B" cam from ford racing. i know people are gonna say that the ford racing cams are outdated grinds but they do work. they do produce more power and are also a good price for a roller cam.

B cam.

BTW, if the '85 has the original Holley poor thing is old enough to go in the bar, LOL.
Carbs do wear out.....
Check Jeg's in the 'rebuilt carbs section I think it's www.jeg's.com for the e-book......

Also, if that carb was 'backfired against good and hard, the power valve is history.......
