Tranny??

Tranny??
My transmission is grinding going into 2nd and tends to pop out of 2nd. Instead of doing a rebuild kit I have been looking on E-Bay for a replacement.
My question is "What year of stock trannys will fit in a 89?" I have seen some cheap trannys on ebay but i don't want to buy one that doesn't fit.
I know that 87-93 2.3 trannys will fit with a new input shaft but what about post 93 and pre 87??

RE: Tranny??
Not to sure about the other mustang trannys fitting. The late 80's early 90's ranger 5spd will fit in too but will be geared lower & will be a little weaker. Same with the Tbird 5spd, but it will require a different input shaft.

RE: Tranny??
Find the latest model T5 you can find, preferably in the early 90's... the later the T5 the stronger it is - Im not sure the exact specs on the exact years - but I do know the older T5's are weaker and you dn't want a tranny out of a 2.3l car unless it was an SVO, and still its not an "exact" bolt on - but you already have that covered. Just look for one out of another GT and you'll be set - just dont forget its gonna cost $150 or so maybe more to ship a tranny.

RE: Tranny??
To be exact, get a '90 or later WC T5 because those have the strongest gears stock. Up through 1989 they are rated to handle only about 265 ft. lbs. of torque, which is what the 5.0 makes stock, so there's no room to grow. Starting in 1990 Ford used a stronger gear set which is rated to handle 300 ft. lbs. stock. The best stock T5 you can get though is the one used in the 1993 Cobras, which is also called the Z-spec, and it's rated to handle 330 ft. lbs. stock.
Aside from the stock T5, you can buy a G-force upgrade kit and rebuild your transmission to handle in excess of 500 ft. lbs. easy. The kit includes stronger gears and bronze shift forks, which are much better than the crappy aluminum ones. The kit costs about $1,200 complete, but if you plan on modding your Mustang, it's good peace of mind.

RE: Tranny??
ive been having the same problem with my 86 GT... at first i thought maybe it was the clutch which is original but after talking to a few people about it i guess it is the tranny... the entire car has over 172,000 on it so im not too sure what to do about it... i would get a stock tranny but if this motor goes and im pretty sure it will, i dont want to have to change the tranny again to handle the new motor im gonna drop in... any ideas
