if i am going with the explorer intake would it be a good idea to get the heads off the engine too if i find one? from what ive read it seems like i would be better going with the GT40 heads vs. gt40p. btw i have BBK shorty unequl length headers, so i dont know if those would fit with the p's or not.
Also since mine is an 87 how will all this stuff be compatible with the speed density system??
If you can get it, I'd grab the GT40 heads too. Or maybe you can get a deal like I did and take the entire engine ($350.) Just tell junkyards you're looking for a complete Explorer engine (like a 95 or 96 or something) and find out the price. Sometimes it's cheaper to buy the whole engine than it is to buy the intake and heads seperate (as weird as that sounds.) I found mine at a local junkyard that had it listed on www.car-part.com

The GT40 heads have a lower compression though, so unless you're running forced induction, you may want to get them milled to at least bring the compression up to 9.5:1.

And yes Glasersil, the GT-40 intake looks better. But it's all about price and performance

What, the heads or the intake? Because from about 4700 RPM to 6100 RPM the Explorer intake manifold outperforms the FRP GT-40 intake manifold. And from 2200 RPM up to 4700 or so it's almost always within 1 HP on the dyno. You can't beat it for the price. Especially if you port it.

I assume you must mean the intake because the Explorer heads are GT40s.

should you look for one with a hole in the exhaust manifold for EGR or one without?

there are 2 ways to go about it..

1. you can cut the upper plennum open and port it then tig weld it back together( not a good idea IMO )

2. Have it extrude honed, wich is what i want to dowhen i get my explorer intake.( and the better choice IMO )

forced induction is a turbo, supercharger, or nitrous.
