Default Advance or retard timing?

My crank gear is set up to be changed or leave stock. I have a 351w and want to get the most bottom end power out of it as possible. Would you guys leave it at normal? Can some one explain what the advancing and retarding of this gear actually does? also what is the easiest way to measure piston to valve clearance? Someone told me to put play doe in the bore then bolt the head on and judge by how much the playdoe mashed? Sounds stupid to me but oh well. thanks alot

That gear changes your cam timing, for low end power you would probably want to retard it, and yes, that is teh correct way to check piston/valve clearance

when checking piston to valve clearance do I have to put a head gasket on it? or can I bolt the head to the engine with out a gasket for this procedure? thanks

i would think you'd want the gasket on there, since it'd be on there in final assembly, but not sure, i suppose with out it, it's just giving you extra clearance...
