I have a 93 LX that had the same problem.. My clutch pedal was extremely hard to push. The rubber boot at the fire wall was dry rotted. Replaced the cable an it help my shifting problem and my clutch pedal problem.. Then a few weeks later the shifting problem came back. It had a Hurst shifter in it. Swapped to a PRO 5.0 and problem solved. Been 4 months and no problem since...

As was already said, changing the fluid and making sure the clutch is adjusted properly will probably make a world of difference. Those are both pretty easy to do, so you might as well do those before messing with other things.
I always use 2 quarts of synthetic ATF in any T5 (world class or not) and it usually pretty much eliminates any shifting issues.
