what is the difference between short block and long block? What did stock come with?
A short block is just the block, cam, lifters, crank, rods, pistons, oil pump, oil pan, all the bearings, and water pump.

A long block is all the above plus: heads, intake and exhaust manifolds, ignition system, induction system, and engine harness.

My understanding has always been different but I may be wrong.

A short block is a block, crank, rods, and pistons

A long block is block crank, rods, pistons, cam shaft, timing chain, timing cover, and heads

You could very well be right. Besides, I forgot about the gear set anyway.

The local 'pick-a-part' down here in Tucson is $130 for any complete V-8 engine...
Sounds like some peep's are getting raped.
Shop more carefully.
