it could be defective, take it back to the store and have them bench test it.

it could be defective, take it back to the store and have them bench test it.
had this happen twice in a row.
the voltage regulaor is on the back of the alt, the plastic thing with the plug on it.

this could be a good chance to upgrade the alternator to a 3g alt from a 94-95 stang.

also one of the fusible links could be burned up, the long rectangle plug on the alternator just goes around the radiator and onto the solenoid on the firewall, then it splits into 3 connectors with ring terminals on the end, just use an ohm meter to see if the wires are stil connected through the fusible link.
the link will be a rubber thing inline with the wire.

1986 mustangs have an external regulator. I'm not exactly sure where its located I'll check out my chilton manual in a second.

My chilton manual says its on the right hand side right infront of the strut tower mount. I know for a fact that my 86 the aternator wires ran from the alternator to the left hand fender with no regulator in between so I'm not sure where its located.
