Ok I posted yesterday about my 86 5.0 and i did wat every1 told me to do and I checked the grounds the fuseable links ,fuses,the ALT. And I still can't get any kinda charge to my batt its like the ALT isn't even working at all Iono wat else this could be. Everything is good I cleaned the ground wires and checked for any broken wires didn't find any at all. The batt is brand new tested that it passed. I checked to see if the wires were getting current they all were and I changed my starter rely soloneid to a brand new 1. And my car still cuts off wen I take neg cable off the batt. Wat da hell could this be?? Is there anything else I should check? I don't kno were my external voltage regulator would be. That would b the only thing I didn't check but not 100% sure if I have 1.

did u check voltage at the battery while runnin.. you should have around 13.6 volts at idle.. if lower than 12.8 or so ur alternator is bad..

did you test the alt. it's self??? and if so how did you do it??? take it to autozone and have them bench test it...

if your car dies when you un hook the batt.... the alt. is gone, take it and have it tested

Buy a new alternator.... problem solved, and what with the shorthand ebonics lingo?

MY car has 12.8v wen the car is off 12.4v wen car is runing its getting no charge. And I just got my ALT Tested at kargen 2 times and it passed plus the ALT Is brand new I just bought it yesterday. I tested the wires from the ALT the had power going to them. Its sumthing stoping my ALT current from getting to my Batt .

dependin on year,but after like 85 or so,if ya take off a neg cable to check a ALT,even if alt is good it wont be after cuz ya cant do that with new cars.....older ones were ok....and chances are if it dies when ya disconnect it,ALT is fried

Have you replaced lead wires from alt. to battery, battery to ground and coil? That'd be my next step. Good Luck

I'm 99% sure that 86 has an external voltage regulator. You need to track that down, should be on one of the fenderwells, most likely the driver side. The alt is charging it just has a problem somewhere between the alt and the battery.
