If the fuse system is the same as my '84, a blown fuse takes out your tail lights and front park lights too. My owner's manual had a fuse diagram and that was better than trying to read the small labels on the fuse block. This has happened twice. Both times it was one of those small bulbs used for side markers. The bulbs had turned silver, and must have shorted out( I hope).

not related to 91hatchgt's problem but i was wondering if it were possible to change the dash bulbs to a different colour? i have a 03 and the backlight is green and i was thinking of changing it to a blue. i was told it may be possible but the actual dash face is tinted green on the numbers. this true?

Ok, I did find the fuse that was out, however, when I took my e-brake off the dash lights went out again, when I pulled it back up, they came back on... So now I am wondering if there is some wire for the brake light that is shorting out my dash lights, does anyone know if this is a possibility before I rip my center console apart...???

RE: Dash Lights
there is a light in the console for the shifter indicator if you have an auto and another wire going from the brake switch and one for the light in the ashtray and another for the cig lighter, so those are the only ones I know of in the console and I have removed the console in mine so I know this for a fact. maybe the brake mechanism is pinching one of the wires for the other lights in the console and this is causing them to go off and on when you move the brake. just a guess that if the lights are wired in series, then a broken wire would kill them all like you describe but when the brake is moved, the two ends touch somehow and then they light up like they should. I would go into the console to try to sort this out. you shouldn't have to pull the whole thing out, just the top part should give you access to the wiring there.
