RE: 85 5.0 4bbl Carb Help
I'm with everyone else her replace the Stock Carb with a aftermarket 600 Holley. Yes the stock is made by Holley but to Ford specifications and there is no external adjustments that can be made. Just keep the old one in a box and put it on if it is ever needed.

I got my 85 mustang gt a couple of months ago, it has 110000 miles on it...
but i had the same exact problem, i would feather he peddle while cranking and it would finally start, only to stall again once it hit idle speed. after a few more starts it would stay running. i figured fuel filter/fuel pump. so i bought a new fuel filter first, still had the same problem. then i noticed my carb was leaking out of many places, so i bought a rebuild kit and rebuilt it. i set the floats to specification and everything...
anyways... none of that fixed the "problem"
so i was telling this to my dad and he said that he wanted to try and start it.
he started it the first try and
what he did was he pumped the gas pedal to the floor twice before starting it.
he claims he has started all of his old carbureted cars this way, but i am not sure if this is true or not.
when it starts this way it runs at about 1500 rpms for a few minutes. my dad told me that fully depressing the gas pedal engages the choke. i don't know if that is technically what happens but it works and i have no trouble starting it anymore.
but it still could be the fuel pump since i haven't replaced that yet. i have never started a mint condition 85 mustang so i don't know if this is actually how it should be started.

How much would a Holley 600 run me?

RE: 85 5.0 4bbl Carb Help
i believe it would be about 300 350 for the nice shiny one haha. but it will be one of the best moves ever i love my new holley havent had a single problem with the car since i used to have the hardest time keeping my car running even after i did the rebuild on the stock one. when you get the new carb before you put it on buy a vacuum secondary spring kit this will allow the secondaries to open sooner and all the way makes the car soooooo much faster

Id say get a inline fuel pressure guage, Ive got 1 on mine. Start the car and run it for about a minute. If the fuel pressure drops to 0 then you have a leak somewhere or the diaphram in the mech. fuel pump is bad and needs to be replaced. After I pump mine twice I dont even have to give it gas to fire right up. 1 quick question, is the timing set to factory specs or is it advanced? If your timing is advanced at all, it can be very difficult to start.
