Default speedometer calibration gear

first off, i know there is a topic at the top by Obsol3te about this but my question isnt covered there.

ok, i have my 3.55's but now need a speedometer gear. Obsol3te says 23 tooth and so does steeda.com so thats no big deal. my problem is this: i was reading through my 2004 ford racing catalog and it says "the drive gear on ford rear wheel automatic transmissions is machined into the output shaft. changing the drive gear is impractical since it requires a new output shaft and transmission teardown. most have 7 or 8 teeth" i have the AOD so whats the deal with this? has anyone here done this to an automatic? ford doesnt even list a 23 tooth gear so id have to order it from steeda.com also, is the gear plastic or metal? just wondering cause it says they are different colors

I don't know about the output shaft having to be replaced and a trans pull down, but i do know that the gear i just got is a 23 tooth and it's plastic.

It's supposed to work on the 3.55's and 3.73 gear swaps.

I hope someone else can clear up your other question.

how come OB gets the credit when I (roundman) gave him the infomation and requested he get it posted at the top of the section so this questions doesn't keep coming up????
anyway, the Ford manual is correct, the drive gear is machined into the output shaft of the tranny, but the gear you want to change to correct the speedo is the DRIVEN GEAR, so it's a piece of cake to change it once you determine the right one you need.
