RE: stock gears???
sorry to kinda take over your thread...but I have a question as well and thought it would be better to not make another thread....so my question is would 3:73 gears be alright for highway driving as well? or is that to high? I want good take off and be able to go on the highway without having the rpms at like 6000 rpm.....its a 5 speed btw

aod's could be ordered w/ 3.27's and you don't wanna swap for anything less less than 2 full gearsets (don't count 3.90's they are a 1/2 gearset) or your not gonna see the diff you expect.
look in the door tag under "ax"
m=2.73
z=3.08
e=3.27
i like 4.10's in my 5-speed, i did them 3 cars ago and swore i'd never go less.
i get 21+ mpg on the freeway w/ the AC running, i turn 3k doing 80 mph
3.73 is just too small, especially in a aod car. you need to see that the 1st gear in a aod car is 2.40 and the first gear of a t5 is 3.35.
multiply the 1st gear (or any given gear) by the rear end gear and it gives you total gear.
try a couple and you'll see that a aod car needs 4.10's to equal a 5-speed w/ 3.08's , so if you have a buddy or trying to make a comparo, use that to give you an idea.
aod's need 3k stall and 4.10's to be a contender ( i owned 2 aod cars, swore i'd never have another after each one too) the t5 swap will feel like you added 100 hp to it.

RE: stock gears???
I have a wrinkle to add to this thread. I visited a door decoder site, and my axle code, M, is listed as 2:72 Lock. When I get carried away, there's only 1 rubber patch on the asphalt. What would Lock mean if they're not both spinning? I believe the ratio, b/c when I'm doing better than 80 I'm not even turning 2000.

RE: stock gears???
did it actually say "lock"? or was it just an L cuz it could mean limited slip, thats what my stang has and I think it's kinda worn out. When I burn em from a stop I leave 2 strips at first then one stops spinning and the other keeps burnin. the marks are something like this:
