Help with coolant leak

Hey Everyone,<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I have a question and was wondering if anyone has some advice. I don't own a Mustang, however I helping a friend out with his head gaskets,he has a 1989 GT. I have rebuilt several engines, however all of them have been Hondas, and VWs,none have been V8s. Anyway, because I was green at this engine I took my time and went slow. After 1 day (heads off) and 1 day (heads on) we fired the engine up. I noticed 2 problems:

1) I have coolant coming from the area of the thermostat housing. Is the thermostat supposed to have an o-ring around it? All the Jap Engines do, and this one didn't (I didn't pay attention when I pulled the old one out) Or did I just screw up putting the housing on. There is enough play in the housing to allow the thermostat to drop out a bit, I'm not sure if I did that. Is this a common screw up?

2) The engine did fire up and it sounded great but it is not idling. I'm not sure if it's because I just put it back together and need to give it a few minutes to build fuel pressure and acclimate itself (I only had it running about 10 seconds before I noticed thecoolant leak, so I shut it off)? Or did I misplace some of the emissions vacuum lines? Does anyone have a link to a good diagram for the vacuum lines?

Any help from the Mustang community would be a great help :)

Thanks,
