Intake cleaning?????
I have an 88 GT vert that I am going to replace my O-rings on my injectors that are leaking. Anyways, figured since I will have upper intake off I was gonna try to clean it up a bit. Tried to clean any carbon off of TB and IAC. I was looking inside the intake and noticed a lot of gunk buildup in it. Tried liberally spraying lots of carb cleaner in it trying to get some of it out. Didn't do much for it. How do most of you get it clean? Also, what is the best way of getting the finish to look better? It is the stock H/O intake. Anything else while I have it off that should be done? Gonna replace valve cover gaskets while at it. Can the valve covers be made to look better besides trying to paint them? While I 'm thinking bout it, I broke one of the bolts that holds down the fuel rail off inside. Guess I need to tap it. Anything I need to be careful with while doing so?

RE: Intake question
Also do you have access to an air gun? or a sand-blaster? oreven a parts washer with the solvent and turntable.
Any local shop should have it just take it there;
also just polish up the plenum and then paint it black or blue it will look SICKKKK.

RE: Intake question
No air, sand blaster, or parts washer. Was goona try to put it all back together tommorrow. It's my DD. Thought bout going the paint route, just didn't want it to look tacky. Eventually going to go to MAF conversion, H/C/I, and forced induction with other supporting mods. But that won't be for 3-4 months. Is there any solvents that a parts store would sell that does a really good job? I cleaned an intake (outside finish) on a LT1 one time with a drill and wire brush attachment, but no matter how hard I tried to get it to look completely even finish I couldn't.

RE: Intake question
I polished some aluminum covers once. All I had was the basic power tools and hand sand paper. It got shiny, but scratchy. Not really smooth and mirrory'. Thats what I meant by "aint easy". But you can just hand sand them, and they will get shiny.

RE: Intake question
yep ive been there done taht with the wire brush
it wont look tacky if u get some nice engine enamel and do thin coat 2-3 times.
choose a good color though like black or blue or red or something.
and yeah u can use engine cleaning solvents any parts store has em
ive used brake parts cleaner and carb cleaner and everything else.
