Car Starts But Backfires Through The Carb.. Why?
Ive Just put a new motor in my car.. (A 331) and im having some problems with it. i got the car started and running. It runs ok but it idles like at 2500. I checked the timing and it was at 30*. so i tried to adjust it back to around 15*. the car started running really low and shi*ty. so i adjusted the idle and got the idle decent and then it backfired through the carb and died. i started it again, it ran for ten seconds backfired and died again. what could cause this? the car runs good with the timing set higher. does this motor need higher timing then my old motor? or is somthing setup wrong?

yeah i was thinking the same thing dizzy might be off carb needs to be tuned bad. mine did the same thing but it was because it was too far advanced

Also the headers getso redhot that the spark plug wire boots melt and catch fire(once) even though the boot was almost an inch away from the header. its the third and fourth back left boot's. I have the equal length headers that are all twisty... Could the car be running to lean? I didnt mess with anything since i had it on my other motor.. (302 with heads and cam)

tunning a carb can be tricky... also the timing will paly a roll in this problem. This is somthing that id like to actually be there on but to get you started, Id make sure ur timing isnt off 180 or in wrong order. so you say you havent touched the carb from the swap, yet you also say you are playing with the idle???? Thats not the first place to start tunning a carb. Throttle plates should be at a relatively standard spot. To set this spot though the carb needs to be off the engine. Flip it over and take a look at how much transfer/idle slot is showing in the bore. It should be a small square. grrrrr......this is tough to try and type out. I can e-mail you some info. Whats addy?? Also, as for the heat!!! Sounds like too much of it. Now why??? Most likely it is related to the carb not being set up right. Excess heat is usually a product of a lean condition unless ur timing is off and ur burning ur fuel in the headers. There is no ez answer. Good luck

The only thing i played with on the carb is the idle swrew, not the air mixtures or float levels. On CaFords.com someone mentioned that baseline timing for a 331 should be around 25-28* and then advance to whatever. have anyone here heard of that? Fable50@comcast.net
