when it was jacked up the wheel wiggled back and forth, i am under the impression that means bad ball joints. my car also has some steering slack. it may be the tierods responsible but i have no idea how to check that.

The play you are feeling could just be wheel bearing play. Don't start throwing parts and money at the car for no reasons. Have it checked properly and go from there.

you are going to have to figure it out somehow...we can only do so much diagnosis over the web...might be beneificial to pay reputable shop to have alook at...then you know exactly what you are dealing with and can budget accordingly.

Personally i wouldn't go with a salvage yard for tie rods ends, ball joints, brake components etc...these items should be bought new.
