Default Ticking noise

In 5th gear at lower RPM when i press the pedal i hear a sort of ticking from the engine, definately the engine. Sounds like an exhaust leak but its not, maybe the lifters out of adjustment?

no it does not mean you need a new engine if it is a lifter tapping just a new lifter where in the hell did you get that from but it kinda sounds to me like a spark knock or something have you advance your timing or anything and what octane gas are you running

my ranger did the same thing in 4th (its an auto). youve got predetonation there. either your timing is too far advanced or your running the car on too low of a octane. i run my ranger on 91 all the time and i never have pinging (i have a JET chip for it) when i run 87 it pings in 4th all day.

if you havent touched the timing and you are running 91 or higher, it may be time for new valve springs

I strongly disagree with this opinion. there are many things that could make a lifter tick sound that don't mean you have to replace the engine. in this case, sounds to me like he's lugging the engine in overdrive at a low speed and getting some predetonation noise.
