ok so i checked the fuse, and it was blown. i replaced it, the instrument illumination came back, then the fuse blew like 30 seconds later. what the heck is going on here???

You may want to pull out your stereo and checkthe wires coming from your dimmer switch. People sometimes do funny things with these wires when hooking up aftermarket stereos.

Sounds like you have a short somewhere, but finding it could be a pain in the butt. I wouldn't think it would be related to the radio because the radio didn't blow, only the instrument cluster. You might want to try and find a wiring diagram, (or if someone can post one that would be great) and see what is on that circuit besides the instrument cluster. Whatever you do, don't take the lazy man's route and upgrade the fuse to a higher amperage. This can lead to burning wires and melting harness clips. IMO
