Default Is The 5.0 Known For Oil Pump Problems?

I have just figured out that I need a new oil pump. Was just wondering if this is a problem with the 5.0? Also was wondering if I should go with the stock replacement or what brand of pump is the best for a stock 5.0? Also can you get the pan off if you jack the moter up taking the motor mounts loose and take fan off? Any help would be great!

I have a 1990 5.0 with 245,000 miles and a 1995 5.0with 170,000 and have never replaced an oil pump on either. Wish I could help you with the removal but like I said I've never had a problem.

From what I heard the pump isnt the problem the shaft is it tends to twist up and break. Arp makes a replacement shaft thoe that isnt supposed to. I think the stock pump would be ok but I would install a better shaft.

I went w/ Melling. I've been told not to use a HiVol pump b/c they are more prone to breakage, but I would upgrade your oil pump driveshaft to an HD one. FRPP has them for ~17 bux or so.

I've heard of people jacking up the motor and pulling the pan, but be careful that you don't damage anything. I'd use a cherry picker if you have one available....that would be easier.....

Youll have to remove the rack n pinion and shaft, tie rod ends. starter and jack her up at the tranny, NOT THE HARMONIC BALANCER.

The tube has to come apart and fall into the oil pan before it will alllow movement forward.

This is a mojor PITA, and NOTHING LESS. Id suggest you pull the motor, drop the pan and replace all bearings while you are there, oil pump and shaft (IF BAD),

NOW, IF YOU DONT REMEMBER TO PUT THAT SHAFT IN THE PUMP, ALL THE WAY THROUGH THAT TINIY LITTLE PASSAGE, THE MOTOR HAS TO COME BACK OUT[:'(]
