Ive checked the timing.. it is set at about 23* with the vacume line off..If iretard it anymore than it is it starts to backfire when i hit the gas. if i advance it, it starts to idle really high and ive adjusted the fast idle screw all the way out and the idle wont go any lower..Im pretty sure i got the float levels right.

I think we need more info on your setup, I still would check my float level if I were you.

Even if its an aftermarket pump 5 lbs is still a bit too much, it should be at 2 to 3 lbs max or you just force too much in it, how do you know it is 5-8 psi? is that what the box said or do you actually have a gauge on the fuel line?

about 5lbs is where you want to be with a regulator.. most electric pumps will produce much more then 5 psi of pressure.

Holley carbs recamend 5-8 psi.

is your valves adjusted, because if not it will back fire like that, but still seems to be timing.
