The most cost friendly solution to your problem would be to take a screwdriver and a hammer to dismantle the internals of the pump itself, being careful not to damage the shaft on the inside. Then make sure the shaft is all lubed up and spins freely. It accomplishes the same thing as using a smog pump dlt pully except it doent look as nice.

If you have no AC and no Smog pump, getting a shorter belt will only make the belt rub right where the tensioner and waterpump meet, at least thats what happened on my buddys 90'.

Best solution by far is to get the march alt bracket so you can get rid of the tensioner and safely run a shorter belt (to elim the smog pump) and plus it looks very clean however this might be out of your budget.

just use a piece of string to figure it out to be sure. its easy and takes no more than a min to do. just make sure to put tension on the tensioner

The easiest way to do it is like I did on my 88.

Take a wrench or socket whatever you prefer to loosen the belt tensioner,drive to the parts store,take you belt off and try a number of belts until you find which one works best to bypass the smog pump...this saves you from making trips back and forth to the parts store

On this related topic, i have the stupid smog delete pulley in my car now, and i was going to pull that out and pull the a/c out. Should i just keep going and pull the power steering so that i only have the alt and waterpump? How hard are these things to turn with out power? I pulled the p/s on my old little 4 banger rice rocket auto-x car and it turned fine, but i'm afaid with all the weight up front on the 5.go i'll need masive forarms to get out of parking spaces....
