Default 1968 289 Engine Question

I have recently taken my 11 year old engine and changed the top end. I have put an Edelbrock performer RPM heads, cam, timing chain, Air Gap intake, and 600 CFM carb, and roller tip rockerson it. It runs good but does not seem like it has a very high RPM capability. I have only had it up to 3500 RPM since it seems like it is struggling to go any farther. I thought it should be able to at least go to 5500 or maybe 6500. It was going further then that before with everything stock except for the intake and carb (same as above). I was wondering if anyone had advice. I am using the stock fuel pump and distributer with a pertronix igniter. How can I get more from this motor. It runs good and sounds good, and will a dyno tune help me at this point? It has a 3spd which I know is limiting the car and 2.73 gears. Any help would be nice. Thanks.

i would say intake but it would usually only make it reach max rpm faster if its better for bottom or slower if better for top but, i dont know 3500 aint sh** i stall up at 3000 on the line with a 306.

Thanks, I bought a compression tester to check the motor out. I will try that tomorrow hopefully. The only other thing i can think of is the fuel pump is not putting enough out causing it to not want to go. Maybe also I need an electronic ignition? I have no clue really. It would go to 4500 easy before I changed things.

I'll bet money that the fuel pump is the problem. Get either a Carter or a Holley pump from Summit or someplace.
You'll pay for it but I'm thinking that's the problem. You are not getting enough volume at carby to run it faster. Also look for a crimp in the gas lines.........

Whats your timing at? Did you check with a timing light to see if it was advancing spark at higher rpms?

I called Edelbrock today and they stated the same thing that my stock fuel pump would not handle the job. I will have to figure out what pump I want to go with now. I will also check the timing again but I think it is good. I will update when I get the new pump. Anyone have a suggestion whether to go with an Edelbrock bolt on or with an electric in-line pump?

i know its off topic, but those 2.73s are KILLING your performance. the car would act 100% better with some 3.73s or 4.10s
