Default Vacuum leak running lean??

Ok I am sure most of you have read my other post about how my car was running. The other day it started to whine like it had a SC on it. I know this means it has a vacuum leak. Could this be causing my whole lean problem?? Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!

it could definitly be causing your lean condition. Check all your vac hoses and test certain areas with starter fluid, or even carb cleaner. If you spray a gasket and the rpm's rise, you have located a vac leak

Ok Thanks Adder. My next question is how dangerous is it to spray starter fluid on the engine while its running? I mean I know its not exactly safe considering you are spraying a flammable substance on a hot surface and an area with possible sparks. I know this is the best way to find a vac leak so I am 100% going to try it I just want to know what safety precautions I need to take to make it as safe as possible? Another thing is how do I get to the gaskets that are hidden by the upper intake? It sounds as if the leak is on the drivers side.

Well in the years that ive been working with engines and searching for leaks.. I have never once had it catch on fire. Typically the fluid will evaporate before it can combust

Since I can't get a upper to lower gasket any time soon would it be ok if I put a very thin layer of gasket maker around the entire old gasket? Thanks.

if you really wanna go that route, you'd be better off pulling the upper intake, and reseal the old gasket with a pencil width's of RTV silicon around the outside edges, high temp stuff too. should be an orange color, which by the way works excellent for fixing minor exhaust leaks in flanges and such...
