Default roll cage question

is it better to find a roll cage all ready to go in a mag. or having someone at a shop build one for you? What would a 10pt run for in either direction?

I've seen full roll cage kits from the magazines and on-line go for 300-400 dollars. It's the install that's going to kill you (a couple grand) if you take it to a shop.

If you can do it yourself, rent a welder. I've done my own for my RX7s and 240s.

I would definately go to a shop and have it custom built there. To me, the kit cages are somewhat okay with you're just looking to a 6 or 8 point rollbar (even then I wouldn't do it personally). But for a car needing a full cage, no one runs a kit cage (unless you are Wolfe). They'd never work for me anyway. I'm so tall, I have all my cages built so the backbar is bent to give me an extra couple of inches of leg room. I have 2 cars done like this. I just bought a third caged car and I'll be having the caged modified so I fit better.

It all just depends where you go to and what you want done. There are guys here that will do a full 10 pt. cage for $800-1000 and some that will want $3500-5000 installed. There are endless upgrades available. What material you use to build it will factor in. One of my caged cars was done back in '97 or '98. It's just a street car and will not pass certification. My 25.1C car is a bad example because I paid extra for some upgrades and I went to a fairly large chassis shop that does nothing but build high end, competition drag race cars. This new car I got was just built by a local guy in our Mustang club that did the 8 pt. for ~$600. I'll probably have him upgrade it for cheap since he buys a lot of parts from me anyway.

$1500 for a 10pt. cage would be considered fairly cheap to me if it will pass certification. Your location will play a big factor too. One of the biggest Mustang chassis guys in the country has a shop about 20 minutes from my house.

Ask JD1969 here. I think he's a chassis guy.

I had a buddy that got a cage put in by this place http://www.vettepieces.com/. They even powder coated it for him to match his interior. I think that he payed like 2 grand for everything.
