Default 2.3 t-5 for 5.0.

I know, I know. But the motor will be done this weekend and I want to get the car to where its driveable. My uncle is going to rebuild my v8 t5 but its going to be early spring until he can get to it, his shop is weeks behind, so I rather him take care of paying customers first.

I can get a 4cyl t5 with a 30 day warrenty for 50 bucks. Then I can go ahead and install my motor and get it running this weekend. I have another uncle that will swap the trans when the v8 t5 is done for 50 bucks. I can sell the 4cyl for 100 bucks when Im done with it so Im not really losing anything.

The question is what am I going to need to do the swap? I know I have to use the v8 bellhousing, and I know I have to a special pilot bearing, but is that it... and does anybody know what part number the pilot bearing is?

I know most of you dont like the idea of a 4cyl tranny behind a v8, but it should work for a couple months while I get the v8 tranny rebuilt if I take it easy on it, right?

I'm just in a bit of a bind and need the car running and dont have the time to get the v8 t5 rebuilt right now...

Thanks, Justin

Bell housing and pilot bering are the only thing you need to do the swap. Unsure on the part number.

You already have a bellhousing, correct?
The 4cyl trans will bolt up to the v8 bellhousing you currently have.

I will dig around to see if I can find some part numbers for the 4 cyl pilot bearing.
P/N's have been posted before.

There are several applications that will work though.
Measure the OD of the input shaft on the trans, then measure the ID of the hole in the 302 crankshaft.
Take those specs to your local NAPA - they are smart enough to find the right pilot bearing for you.

A friend of mine ran a 4 cyl trans for nearly a year in his h/c/i 302. Toward the end of the year he made a serious effort to kill that trans, but it never died.
I used that same trans for a school rebuild project in college later. I didn't have to replace anything. I still have the trans for when my 2.3 turbo conversion trans gives out.
The only reason I don't want to run the 4 cyl trans in my 408w is because the gears are too tall for a larger motor.
You will most likely notice the gear change with the 4 cyl trans.

Good Luck,
jason

Thanks. I'm going to wait until saturday and if I havent found a good used one by then Im going to swap in a 4cyl one.

Like I said, if I use a 4cyl it'll only be for a couple of months, then I will switch to my rebuilt t5... I just want to get the car running, but then again I dont want to half @ss it.. Uhhh, what to do?

The 4cyl trans is not weaker than a v8, it is just different gear ratio.

I havent found the correct part number yet, still looking. If you are anybody else has it that would be awesome. I'm about to call my cousin and see if he wants to go pick up a tranny with me, its about an hour drive and I dont want to go by myself... plus I want him to help me pull it, should take over 30 mins though...
