what to look for without touching?

what to look for without touching?
I'm looking at an '88 GT with T-topsin a junk yard nearby. The problem is it's an auction deal, so i can't really look at the thing until i have a winning bid. From what i can tell from the outside, the body needs a touch of work. I think the car was painted very recent before the person turned it into the junk yard. It's got beautiful glossy black paint. There's a dent in the door about a foot long by 6 inches tall. No rust visible though. There IS one spot smaller than a dime on the hood that's rusted. other than that the body looks very clean, fenders and whatnot look real straight. The interior (through the window) looks incredible. It's all stock, but so clean i think it must have been german owned.
the biggest problem i can tell without looking under the hood or driving is there's no keys, so someone has torn the steering colum area open to hotwire it. it's got brand new looking tires. A friend of mine works at the junk yard, he says he's driven it around the yard and says it runs well.
i'm thinking a 1500 dollar bid would seal it for sure. (5.0 mustangs are pretty rare here in germany, so i don't want to let something slip through my fingers by being stingy.) my question is... what else can i check without really touching the car? would any of you take this risk? i havn't checked mileage...
advice would be greatly appreciated.

RE: what to look for without touching?
i would just do a real good visual inspection looking for any body work or rust underneath. even if the drivetrain is shot with a good body 1500 is a good deal to me. i would love to have a 88 t-top stang. good luck

Maybe when the auction begins they might lift the hood if not all you can do is really look the stang over really well. Good luck andyou don't see any t-top stangs around anymore.

+1 to posted above... there are not too many around. I would check on mileage though. But if you get it for $1,500 bucks and it has 150K its still a good deal as long as its not rusted to death underneath....

It's a five speed. I think i'm going to go ahead and place a bid for 1500. Cross your fingers for me. any more advice is still much appreciated. thanks folks.
oh, and germany.. not so cool for the 5.0 world. The auto inspection stuff over here is RIDICULOUS! You're now not allowed to have an aftermarket exhuast that's louder than stock. How they measure what the stock exhuast was... i'm not sure. There's also new regulations on suspension that's going to make it near impossible to do anything worth doing to that aspect of the car.
