last summer i bought an instrument cluster out of a 92 gt for my 87 gt without even considering the possibility that they could be differnet. what a huge mistake. i didnt try modding it tohugh, looked at the back and it didnt evne look like it could plug in so i said f*ck it. i took the guts out hoping i could lay the clusters in place in the old shell. noooope. i bet someone who knows what they're doing cna make it work though. i just kept the speedo gear and am gonna just buy the damn faces. i think you can do that, does anyone know?

This is what it looks like all torn down.
As you can see in Jays89GT's pic, there are 3 connections to worry about, one cable for the speedo, and 2 connections for the electronics, on the right and on the bottom left.
As for the fitment between the 2, I don't know anything about that, I had an 88 Cluster and swapped for a 140 from an 88/89, which was just plug and play.
