Default EGR plate coolant lines

I've noticed there are engine coolant lines running through the egr plate behind the throttle body on my 88 5.0. Whats the purpose of this other than heating up the air charge into the engine. Does this have something to do with the operation of the egr valve? If I block this off, will I get any error codes or cause a drivability or idle problem?

Youwon't have any issues if you block those off. They don't hurt anything having them there though

If the EGR is operational they will cool the spacer....exhaust gases flowing through the spacer will increase the temp higher than the coolant temp....bottom line, they're used for cooling purposes.
