When I first bought my car I took it for a test drive and it would do the very same thing, rev to 4500ish and just hang there and kinda surge. The car lot guy was a little less than impressed but it probably helped me on the price a bit. lol I checked the plugs and they were gapped too large and worn. Changed the plugs and it was fine. The problem is that there a few things that could cause the problem. I would start with a fuel filter, actaully I would put a fuel pressure gauge on it and drive it to see whats happening and then go from there, one thing at a time. Then check the tune up and so on. Been my experience with maf fords that they seldom set a maf code and if they have a bad maf they are dogs. Unhook the maf and take it for a drive and if it is the maf you will know cause it will seem to run like normal. THEN verify that it is the sensor or a wiring problem.
