what can i do to lean it out to make it not run so rich.

That depends, you may have something wrong and that's why it's running rich. You could check your 02 sensors as a starting point.

Make sure that there's nothing wrong thats causing the problem first.

is there anyway i can check my o2 sensors besides checking for codes. sometimes i think it runs rich when i try to start it and then when i finally get it started the check engine light comes on for a minute or so. then it runs fine. would a tune up help. what is envolved in doing a tune up. what needs to be changed beside plugs.

Generally a tune up consists of wires,plugs,distributor cap and rotor, airfilter if it's time for a new one.

Sounds like you have something more than a tune up going on there, IF you computer stores the codes that caused the check engine light to come on, Autozone might be able to code scan your car and find out by the code whats going on.

What you describes sounds like it might be an O2 sensor, but before you spend any money have the computer scanned with a scan tool for codes.
